Deadline for PV obligation postponed to 1 April 2026

Are you a large electricity consumer? The mandatory installation of solar panels has been postponed from 30 June 2025 to 1 April 2026. This gives you more breathing space to comply with the rules.

Why this postponement?

  • The Council of State criticised the legal basis of the previous postponement arrangements.
  • Without a proper decree and accompanying implementing decisions, legal uncertainty arises.
  • With this general postponement, the Flemish government is avoiding hassle for owners, leaseholders and building owners.

Who is affected?

  • Companies with an annual consumption of more than 1,000 MWh.
  • 2,500 connections are covered by this obligation.

What else is permitted?

  • Location choice: not only on the roof, but also ground installations and solar carports

Ambition remains intact
Minister Depraetere emphasises that this postponement does not lower the level of ambition. On the contrary, the PV obligation remains crucial to Flanders' renewable energy targets and is in line with the European trend.
